Michele
O'Hearn, an accomplished song writer and open mike performer, was the guest speaker for the Riverside Young Writers'
group on August 13, 2011. As part of her presentation, Michelle shared her journal and the process of how
she gets her ideas for songs, rhythms, and lyrics. She, also, shared the creative history and inspiration experienced by song
writers like Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre', Eminem, Beyonce', and Sheryl Crowe. Ms. O'Hearn
emphasized that in today's market, record labels want polished people who already have a following. She reiterated the
importance of staying healthy by practicing healthy habits. Michelle said that the best way for a new artist "to get
out there" is to: learn the craft, learn an instrument (preferably, the piano), learn to write and go to college! Ms.
O’Hearn stated that many young writers launch their music careers during their last year of college with their senior
projects. Discussion of senior projects generated an interest and an exchange of information on several Virginia colleges
that offer majors in music. Before the presentation ended, Michelle O’Hearn invited the young writers to share their lyrics and
their music. The meeting ended with the enthused participation of the young people clapping and ad-libbing as well as singing
their own lyrics accompanied by guitar and ukulele music that was created and played by members of the Riverside Young Writers.

The Young Virginia Writers Club (YVWC), established
in 2002, is a division of the Virginia Writers Club (VWC), founded in 1918. The mission of the YVWC is to encourage and assist
middle school and high school level students in the development of their writing talents. Activities include regular meetings
where local groups have formed, an annual conference, and networking with Virginia Writers Club volunteers in a mentoring
relationship either online or in person. A newsletter is mailed or sent via email to all members featuring announcements of
statewide activities, contest listings, announcements of contest awards and publishing successes of YVWC members, writing
tips, and occasional interviews with local and nationally acclaimed writers and publishing industry professionals. If a student is interested in having their writings published now, or in the future,
membership in the YVWC and working with a mentor provides a wonderful opportunity to learn from published authors and people
in the publishing business. Membership is FREE and open to all middle school and high school level students regardless
of race, gender, national origin, religion or disability. More website info: http://www.virginiawritersclub.org/yvwc.html
